Mulé will be Maude T. Lane Professor in Surgical Immunology

James J. Mulé, professor of surgery, also will hold the Maude T. Lane Professorship in Surgical Immunology.

His additional appointment, effective March 15, was approved by the Regents.

“The Lane Professorship was established last December through a bequest from the estate of Maude T. Lane,” says Giles G. Bole, dean of the Medical School. “The purpose of the bequest, under the direction of the Department of Surgery, is to promote research to determine the cause and possible cure of cancer.

“Dr. Mulé is an international authority on cancer immunotherapy and gene therapy. He joined the faculty in May 1995 and he has moved rapidly to establish his scientific presence within the U-M community. He has established successful laboratories both in the Department of Surgery and the Cancer Center. As a result of these efforts, Dr. Mulé was named program director for gene therapy within the Cancer Center.

“Dr. Mulé has the requisite leadership skills to advance the immunology effort in the Department of Surgery and in the Medical School’s scientific community.”
