SAPAC sponsors events for Rape Prevention Month

Evelyn C. White, visiting scholar in women’s studies at Mills College, will present the Rape Prevention Month keynote address at 7 p.m. Wed. (March 20) in the fourth Floor Amphitheatre, Rackham Building. A lecturer on feminist issues, White is the author of Chain Chain Change: For Black Women in Abusive Relationships and the editor of The Black Women’s Health Book: Speaking for Ourselves.

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC) is sponsoring several events during March and April in recognition of Rape Prevention Month (March 18–April 12) and SAPAC’s 10 th anniversary.

The following events are open to the public and free of charge, unless otherwise indicated:

Brown bag discussion: “Sexual Assualt and Regretted Sex: Understanding the Differences,” noon–1 p.m. March 26, Welker Room, Michigan Union.

“Sexism in Advertising Contest” Ballots are available to cast your vote at SAPAC and other locations on campus. Results will be announced at a Candlelight Vigil on the Diag at 6 p.m. April 12.

“Helping to Heal Workshop: For Friends and Family Members of Survivors of Sexual Assualt,” noon–1 p.m. April 1 in the SAPAC Conference Room, Room L-107 Winchell House, West Quadrangle.

Self-Defense Workshop for Women, 6–9 p.m. April 2 in the Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union. Participants will be taught basic moves and tactics to protect themselves in threatening situations. Pre-registration and a $5 donation are requested.

“Breaking the Silence: Sexual Assault in the Asian American Community” 6–8 p.m. April 9 in the Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union.

Prisms: A Publication dedicated to women survivors of violence. SAPAC and the English Composition Board are requesting poetry, stories and essays about people’s experiences and views toward violence for the 1996–97 publication of P risms. Entries may be submitted to SAPAC until April 23.
