DAPCEP named ‘Best Managed Non-Profit’

From the Detroit Area
Pre-College Engineering Program

The Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) was recently named the “Best Managed Non -Profit” with a budget of more than $2.5 million by Crain’s Detroit Business.

DAPCEP was lauded for having “a very targeted program” by judge Gary Dembs, president of the Non-Profit Personnel Network in Southfield. “We looked very hard at the finances of these companies and at key areas such as collaborations and marketing. DAPCEP was above the competition.”

DAPCEP Executive Director Kenneth Hill says that the program’s “greatest strength is in our collaboration with our corporate and university partners, with the Detroit Public Schools, and with strong community support, especially from our parent group.”

“Together,” he adds, “we offer programs that reach 5,000 sixth- through 12th-graders annually. Our goal is to expand programming to include kindergarten through fifth grade, and service 10,000 students each year by the year 2000.”

DAPCEP is recognized as one of the premier pre-college education programs in the nation and marks its 20th anniversary this year.

It is supported by 30 Detroit-area corporations, eight universities (including the U-M), the Detroit Public Schools, the National Science Foundation, the state of Michigan, the City of Detroit, parents and community groups.
