James Richards recommended to be interim Pharmacy dean
Pending final approval by the Regents in February, Associate Dean James Richards will serve as interim dean of the College of Pharmacy while the search continues for a successor to Ara Paul, who retired as dean in December after 20 years in the position.
Richards says he accepted the six-month appointment offered by Provost J. Bernard Machen because “I am convinced he understands the quality of our College and its value to the University and is committed to providing the support necessary to ensure that we remain at the forefront of pharmacy education and research.”
“I believe the College of Pharmacy is well positioned to maintain its current progress while the search for permanent leadershipcontinues,” he says. His interim term will expire June 30.
After graduating from the U-M in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, Richards practiced pharmacy for several years at State Drug in Ann Arbor and earned a master’s degree at Michigan. He joined the Pharmacy faculty full-time in 1962, teaching courses in pharmacy administration and economic issues. Eight years later, he was appointed the College’s first assistant dean.
