In 1994, Coretta Scott King and the Martin Luther King Federal Holiday Commission challenged the country to honor King by celebrating MLK Day through participation in community service.

Responding to this challenge, the MLK Symposium Planning Committee and Project SERVE last year developed the program “Acting on the Dream.”

“Acting on the Dream” is designed to give U-M students, faculty and staff an opportunity to participate in community service projects at agencies throughout Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

“Acting on the Dream” will again be a feature of U-M activities commemorating King on Jan. 15, complementing the symposium theme of “Affirmation through Action: The Challenge Continues.”

“Student, faculty and staff participation in the day of service will greatly enrich the experience of all participants,” notes Michael Jones-Coleman, who is coordinating this year’s MLK Symposium. “In addition, those involved will be taking advantage of the MLK holiday by making a meaningful contribution to the community.”

Those interested in participating in the day of service should complete the registration form and return it to one of the addresses on the form by Nov. 22.

Questions about the day of service should be directed to Jones-Coleman, 936-1055, or [email protected], or Jeff Howard, Office of Community Service Learning, 763-3548, or [email protected].
