Clinton senior adviser will speak at anniversary celebration for U’s Public Service Intern Program

George Stephanopoulos, senior adviser to President Clinton, will speak at the University at 7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 10) in Room 100, Hutchins Hall.
Stephanopoulos’s free, public talk is sponsored by Career Planning and Placement in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the University’s Public Service Intern Program.
The Public Service Intern Program, originally begun by U-M students, assists undergraduates from all academic departments in obtaining summer internships with government and related organizations. About 70 students secure internships through the program each summer, and more than 1,400 students have interned in more than 265 different offices over the program’s 25-year history.
Stephanopoulos is currently senior adviser to the president for policy and strategy. During the 1992 presidential campaign, he served the Clinton/Gore campaign as deputy campaign manager and director of communications. In that position he oversaw polling, policy, scheduling, press relations and media operations.
Before joining Clinton’s campaign, Stephanopoulos was the executive floor manager to House Majority Leader Richard A. Gephardt. In 1988 he was deputy communications director for the Dukakis/Bentsen campaign and prior to that served as administrative assistant for Rep. Edward Feighan of Ohio.
He holds a master’s degree in theology from Balliol College, Oxford University, England, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He obtained his B.A. in 1982 from Columbia University, graduating summa cum laude in political science.
