Teleconference on scientific research issues can be seen on UMTV
Issues of interest to the scientific research community will be discussed in a teleconference available on UMTV Channel 12 1-4 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 1). During the first half of the teleconference, Neal Lane, director of the National Science Foundation, will moderate a studio panel discussing “Current Issues in Scientific Research.” The second half is an opportunity for the viewing audience to either telephone or fax questions or comments for the panel and Lane to answer.
Topics for discussion include:
The transition from the expansion of educational, corporate and government research laboratories created following the Cold War and in response to economic growth to the current economic situation.
Impending constraints on financial support for non-defense research and development.
How the changes and budget reductions affect the human resources and institutions in the research community.
Responses the research community could or should make.
Panelists include Mildred A. Dresselhaus, professor of electrical engineering and of physics, MIT; David Goodstein, professor of physics and applied physics and vice provost at the California Institute of Technology; Daniel S. Greenberg, editor and publisher of Science and Government Reports; Thomas J. Meyer, the Kenan Professor of Chemistry and vice chancellor of graduate studies and research at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and Dick Thornburgh, counsel, Kirkpatrick and Lockhart, co-chair of the Task Force on State-Federal Partnerships in Science and Technology, Carnegie Commission on Science, Technology and Government.
Those who do not have access to UMTV are welcome to watch from Room 4006, Fleming Administration Building.
