Writer’s Harvest begins Thursday

University of Michigan English faculty members will join forces Thursday (Nov. 2) with more than 1,000 other writers in an effort to combat hunger.
Nicholas Delbanco, Lorna Goodison, Lemuel Johnson and Tish O’Dowd will read selections from their own fiction and poetry works as part of the fourth annual Writer’s Harvest, a series of simultaneous readings across the country for Save Our Strength, a national anti-hunger organization.
Last year the University raised more than $1,500, second only to Northwestern University among the more than 200 participating communities.
The University’s reading this year will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, in the Rackham Amphitheatre, fourth floor, Rackham Building. Tickets are available at Borders Books and Music in Ann Arbor and at the door, with a suggested donation of $5.
The Writer’s Harvest is one of many fiction and poetry readings presented during the year by the Department of English and Borders, called the Visiting Writer’s Series.
Other readings planned for November include:
Nov. 9, 5 p.m.: James Landis, formerly editor in chief at William Morrow, has received much acclaim for Lying in Bed, which he presents as his first novel although he has written other titles under pseudonyms. Publisher’s Weekly called Landis’ book “one of the most uninhibited and intensely sexy novels to appear in some time.”
Nov. 28, 4 p.m.: Award-winning poet Safiya Henderson-Holmes, associate professor of poetry and creative writing at Syracuse University, has penned the compilations Madness and a Bit of Hope and, most recently, Daily Bread.
