Alcohol Awareness Week slated for Nov. 6-9

The U-M Alcohol Awareness Week (UMAAW), Nov. 6-11, is part of the substance abuse prevention effort at the University, coordinated through the Substance Abuse Education Network. The events provide an opportunity to learn about alcohol and its effects by attending lectures and panel discussions and checking out unique venues like the Chrysler Neon Drunk Driving Simulator.
UMAAW events are a way to validate the choices of students, faculty and staff who have decided to drink moderately or not to drink at all. Information on assistance for alcohol and/or other drug problems will be available at each program.
Primarily focusing on students, UMAAW events are free and open to the entire University community.
Films: Special selection of movies Nov. 6-9 on RHA Channel 72 in addition to When a Man Loves a Woman, Nov. 10, and What’s Love Got To Do With It?, Nov. 11, both at 9 p.m. in Auditorium 3, Modern Languages Bldg.
Self help panel discussions: 3-5 p.m. Nov. 6 in Room 3064 Frieze Bldg., and 9-11 a.m. Nov. 9 in Room 3063 Frieze.
Drunk Driving Simulator: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7 at Elbel Field. Drive “drunk” in a real Chrysler Neon.
Talk to Us! Interactive Theater: 9 p.m. Nov. 7 in Jordan Lounge, Mosher Jordan.
Dangerous Promises: 12-1 p.m. Nov. 8 in the University Health Service (UHS) Basement Lounge. A slide presentation by Laura Stuart on alcohol ads/violence against women.
Speaker: Mike Green, 7 p.m. Nov. 8 in Rackham Auditorium.
Mocktail Parties: Nov. 9 Mocktails will be served through the dinner hours in Residence Halls.
Low Risk Drinking Choices: 5:15-7 p.m. Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP) Conference Room, 715 N. University. Speaker will be Nora Gessert, staff development associate at FASAP.
You Wanna Party: 7:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Wolverine Room, Michigan Union. Presentation on alcohol and the law with Mary Lou Antieau, judicial affairs in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Club Fabulous: 10 p.m. Nov. 18, call 763-4186 for location. Keep the spirit going at this dance party for lesbian, gay and bisexual people and friends. Smoke-, alcohol- and drug-free. Tickets are $4 at the door.
