U celebrates Peace Corps Nov. 6-9

Peace Corps Week kicks off on campus Nov. 6-9 with activities designed to inform students, faculty and staff about opportunities available in the Peace Corps.
Nearly 6,000 Peace Corps volunteers currently are spending two years working in 90 countries around the world.
“You’re not going to find many organizations that will provide an opportunity for you to live in a foreign country for two years for free,” says Joseph Dorsey, campus Peace Corps coordinator.
Dorsey, who was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Ivory Coast, believes the immersion into a different culture is one of the unique benefits of the Peace Corps experience.
“While the Peace Corps does provide you with a living stipend, you are expected to live on a grass-roots level,” Dorsey says. “Your food, clothing and housing should be similar to those of the people with whom you live. You really get to make a contribution when you live and interact with people in a new culture for two years.”
Currently, more than 80 U-M students are serving in the Peace Corps.

Interviews in the Career Planning and Placement Office, Student Activities Building, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 6.
An information table in the Michigan Union 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 7.
The new Peace Corps documentary, “Completely Alive,” shown at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 in the International Center, Michigan Union.
Peace Corps booth at the Job Fair at 1-5 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Michigan Union.
