The College of Pharmacy recently received two gifts totaling $120,000.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. has given $100,000 to the College to establish a Dean’s Endowment Discretionary Fund.

Kenneth Weg, pharmaceutical group president at the company, said the gift was given “in appreciation of the Bristol-Myers Squibb employees who have graduated from the College of Pharmacy.” The company employs 20 of the College’s graduates in scientific research, product development, clinical testing, sales, marketing, communications and management.

Ara G. Paul, dean of the College, called the donation a vote of confidence in the University. “The vision to invest in pharmaceutical education through this gift attests to their values,” he said.

Income from the endowment fund is unrestricted and can be used by the dean for any of the College’s needs, including scholarships, fellowships, research and teaching.

Meijer Inc. has pledged $20,000 to establish a scholarship fund to help support students studying for a doctor of pharmacy degree.

“This gift will help the College maintain the standards which have consistently placed it among the premier pharmacy schools in the country, producing outstanding graduates and innovative research for the advancement of the pharmacy profession,” Paul said.

Each year, several of the University’s Pharm.D. students complete part of their professional training at Meijer pharmacies in southeastern Michigan, under the guidance of U-M clinical pharmacy faculty.

Fourteen graduates of the College of Pharmacy work for Meijer as pharmacists, pharmacy managers or buyer-merchandisers.

The Meijer gift consists of two parts—a pledge of $15,000 to be paid over a five-year period for an endowed scholarship fund for pharmacy students, and $1,000 per year for five years for immediate student support.

The donations by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Meijer move the College closer to its $15.7 million goal in the University’s $1 billion Campaign for Michigan.
