Record number of freshmen enrolled

The University enrolled nearly 3,200 in-state students among this fall’s incoming freshman class, according to figures released last week.

Also, for the first time in the University’s history, women outnumber men among entering students, 2,587 to 2,562.

A total of 5,149 entering freshmen—a record number—are enrolled at the Ann Arbor campus this fall. That represents a 5.3 percent increase over last year’s freshman class size of 4,891. Of those, 3,196, or 62.1 percent, are Michigan residents and 1,953 are nonresidents.

“We committed to at least 3,000 slots for Michigan students in this fall’s entering class, and we are extremely pleased that we were able to exceed that number by nearly 200 spaces,” says Lisa Baker, associate vice president for university relations. “As the numbers of graduating high school seniors in the state begin to climb over the next few years, we will work to increase the numbers of resident freshmen accordingly.”

The percentage of in-state students in the undergraduate student body as a whole is 66.2 percent. A total of 15,599 undergraduates from the state of Michigan are enrolled this fall, up from 15,479 in fall 1994.

Total enrollment for the Ann Arbor campus is 36,687 students, a slight increase (up 144 students or 0.4 percent) over fall 1994. Undergraduate enrollment, 23,575, is up by 337 students over fall 1994 while graduate and professional programs enrolled 193 fewer students, or 13,112.
