Anxiety disorders, domestic violence and management skills are a few of the diverse critical issues that will be explored in a series of fall workshops sponsored by the Department of Social Work at University Hospital and the School of Social Work.

“Critical Issues in Health Care Social Work,” running from Oct. 12 through mid-November, consists of six day-long workshops on current topics important to many involved in social work.

Scheduled workshops include:

Thursday, Oct. 12: “Anxiety Disorders: Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.” Joseph Himle, senior social worker and lecturer at the Medical Center, will speak on the use of exposure therapy and other cognitive behavioral treatments for anxiety disorders.

Oct. 19: “Advanced Supervision and Staff Management Skills in Medical Settings.” This workshop for experienced social work supervisors will focus on communication, group leadership and relationship-building, and will deal with the restructure of programs, case trauma and helping workers deal with job stress. The presenter is Lawrence Shulman, professor of social work at Boston University and training consultant.

Oct. 24: “Working with Clients Who Have Experienced Traumatized Loss.” This workshop is designed to develop understanding of the dynamics of complicated grief reactions and present tools for dealing with such situations. Sallie Foley, a senior social worker at the Medical Center and adjunct lecturer at the School of Social Work, is the presenter.

Oct. 30: “Pain Management: Psychological and Behavioral Approaches.” Matthew Loscalzo, director of oncology social work at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, will explore the determinants of pain and discuss cognitive and behavioral methods for the treatment of chronic pain.

Nov. 6: “A Guide to Using DSM-IV in Your Practice with Adults.” Jay Callahan, assistant professor of social work at the University of Illinois-Chicago and formerly of the U-M Department of Psychiatry, will examine the process of making a DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV) diagnosis.

Nov. 13: “Working with Families in Health Care Settings.” Judith Trachtenberg, director of social work at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, will address issues of diversity, the changing family and the wide range of family responses in counseling families in health care environments.
