Robert L. Macdonald, professor of neurology and of physiology, will also hold the Russell N. DeJong Professorship of Neurology.
The appointment, for five years beginning Aug. 1, 1995, was approved by the Regents at their September meeting.
“This professorship was established last May and made possible through funds available from several gift accounts within the Department of Neurology, as well as financial support from family members and graduates of the residency program under Dr. DeJong’s direction,” said Medical School Dean Giles G. Bole. “Dr. DeJong had a very distinguished career at the U-M until his retirement in 1977.”
Bole said Macdonald “is an outstanding clinician, teacher, and neuroscientist who has received national and international recognition for his work. He has made major service contributions to the Department of Neurology, the Medical Center, and nationally, serving on major committees at all levels, including a National Institutes of Health Neurological Science Study Section.
“Macdonald is an international authority on the mechanism of action of anticonvulsant drugs and their use in the treatment of epilepsy.”
Macdonald has been a faculty member since 1978.
