SERVICE AWARDS
Editor’s note: University staff members were honored for 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service last month at several ceremonies. Three of the service award recipients have been employed by the University for 40 or more years and 47 of them for 30 or more years.
Richard L. Etzel
Richard L. Etzel, who retired last year after 40 years in the Plant Operations Paint Shop, now lives in Florida. Etzel painted many of the units in North Campus Family Housing and spent part of his career in the University Hospitals keeping up with painting needs there.
Now, he says, he enjoys working in his yard in the Florida sunshine.
Robert E. Kalmbach
“Ford, Carter, Bush, Clinton.” Photographer Bob Kalmbach ticks off the names of the presidents who have been the subjects of his photography during his 40 years at the University. He has photographed countless politicians, heads of state, sports figures and musicians. “Most of the famous people were really nice. I’ve enjoyed working with them,” he says. If he knows any secrets about the celebrities, he’s not going to divulge them.
Kalmbach did not begin his career surrounded by visiting heads of state, though. “My dad worked at Photo Services and I used to carry equipment for him. I eventually got a job working as a darkroom printer. I wasn’t really interested in photography at first, but then I really began to enjoy it,” he notes.
Kalmbach’s enjoyment of sports made him a natural match for the job of photographing University sporting events for News and Information Services.
“I love sports. Being a sports nut, I’d be paying to go to the games anyway. Photographing sports is just the frosting on the cake for me.”
He says he has been pretty lucky covering football. “I’ve only been nailed by a couple of players.”
Whether you know it or not, you have probably come across Bob’s work somewhere at the University. His photographs grace the halls of the Michigan Union, the U-Club, the Alumni Association, the Fleming Building and private offices across campus.
He occasionally receives calls from friends around the country telling him they saw a photo of his in their local papers. The most unusual call of this nature came about 20 years ago. A University professor had moved to Tehran, Iran. While reading one of the Tehran newspapers, he came across a story about an Iranian boy receiving special medical treatment at a hospital in Michigan. The professor told Kalmbach that it was quite a surprise to see the caption, “Photos by Bob Kalmbach,” accompanying the article.
Reta J. Teachout
Reta Teachout spent her childhood summers working on her family’s farm near Lansing. Her first job at the University was a big change for her–she had never had a job where she worked inside.
She says that the adjustment to a more sedentary occupation was not very difficult, and she quickly grew fond of her department. In fact, she grew so fond of the Department of Civil Engineering that she has worked there for 41 years.
Teachout, an administrative assistant II, says that she has most enjoyed working with the hundreds of students who have passed through her office over the years. Many of the graduate students with whom she has worked have become successful professors. “I’m proud of the kids who come back to visit and who have become so successful,” she says.
Teachout has had a front row seat to watch some of the major changes on campus. She remembers looking out the window of her first office in West Engineering and watching the Undergraduate Library being constructed–the first time. “I’ve lasted through two UGLis,” she jokes.
While many of her friends opted to stay on Central Campus, Teachout was part of the first group from Civil Engineering to make the move up to the near-wilderness of North Campus. “It was like coming up to the boonies. The parking lot was a big mudhole and the building wasn’t completely finished yet. I needed to bring my survival bag. There were no cafeterias–just soda machines. It was difficult that first summer up here,” she remembers.
Obviously, conditions have improved in Teachout’s years on North Campus, and continue to improve as she watches the new ITIC building being built across the North Campus Diag.
