Man arrested for assault, malicious destruction
A 24-year old man not affiliated with the University was arrested by Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers on May 13 for malicious destruction of police property, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, and assault on a police officer, a misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail. Officers stopped the man on Central Campus for possession of alcohol on the Diagonal. DPS Capt. James R. Smiley said the man assaulted two DPS officers on campus, then kicked out two back windows of the police car while being transported to the Washtenaw County Jail. The subject pleaded guilty to both charges.
Victim identifies assailant
A 25-year old man not affiliated with the University was arrested on May 23 on charges of assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct. The incident occurred on May 22 at approximately 7 p.m. on the Diag. The victim contacted DPS officers who located the subject near Mason Hall. The victim made a positive identification. On May 23, the subject was placed in jail on $50,000 bond. On May 31, the subject agreed to a reduced plea of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree, a misdemeanor offense punishable by up to two years in jail. The bond was set at $1,500 and the subject was taken back to jail to await sentencing.
DPS recovers wallet, man charged with home invasion
A 19-year-old man not affiliated with the University was arrested by DPS officers on May 25. He was charged with home invasion, a 10-year felony. Smiley said a student in South Quad was studying in her room at approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 30 when the man opened her unlocked door and removed her wallet from the room. DPS officers recovered the victim’s driver’s license and ATM card on May 14. The subject was in the Clinton County Jail on other charges; DPS officers brought him back to Washtenaw County for a preliminary hearing. The subject pleaded guilty to illegal entry, a misdemeanor that carries a sentence of up to 90 days in jail.
DPS surveillance leads to arrest
A 24-year-old man, registered as a U-M student but not currently taking classes, was arrested on June 6 on charges of receiving and concealing over $100, a felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years. At 9:30 a.m. June 6, DPS officers spotted a car parked in the Ronald McDonald House parking lot. The parking permit appeared stolen. Officers checked the vehicle identification number, which indicated the car had been stolen in Washtenaw County. DPS officers set up surveillance. At approximately 1:30 p.m. the subject entered the car. Officers placed him under arrest. The subject was arraigned in 15th District Court on June 7 and the case is pending in court.
DPS asks your help in search
At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, there was an attempted criminal sexual assault in the Church Street carport on the northeast side of the structure. The Department of Public Safety is seeking the public’s assistance in apprehending the offender. DPS officers request that anyone who was in the area and noticed anything suspicious contact the DPS detective bureau, 764-8559.
