‘Welcome to Michigan ’95’ gears up

From its Aug. 30 kick-off to a Labor Day wind-up, “Welcome to Michigan ’95” will be packed with activities to provide a warm welcome to new members of the University community by encouraging campuswide participation.
Created last year to help students become familiar with and feel connected to the campus as a learning community in both curricular and co-curricular areas, the Welcome program attracted participants to events ranging from an in-service community learning program at more than two dozen sites to dozens of workshops as well as dances, picnics, movies and the more traditional welcoming Convocation.
Organizers have set a June 16 deadline for return of event confirmation forms. In a letter to faculty, Maureen Hartford, vice president for student affairs, is encouraging faculty “to create an opportunity for dialogue with students. For example, you might have a favorite piece of music, work of art, film or book that you feel would be fun and interesting to talk about with students.” Hartford emphasized that faculty “are limited only by their imaginations.” Activities do not have to be related to their disciplines. “Welcome” organizers will arrange for a location and all other logistics after faculty identify their activities, times and dates.
Several themes already have emerged for the week–Aug. 31 is designated as academic program day, Sept. 1 is a day in the Ann Arbor community, Sept. 1 and 4 are information and success skills programming days and Sept. 3 revolves around Central Campus programming. In mid-summer, new students will receive a detailed schedule inviting them to participate in the week’s events.
