$3 million trust fund creates professorship, helps students at Medical Center
A $3 million trust fund at the Medical School will create an endowed professorship and also help students in need of financial assistance. The faculty position will be known as the J. Griswold Ruth, M.D., and Margery Hopkins Ruth Endowed Professorship in Internal Medicine. The scholarship endowment also will bear their names.
Ruth received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the U-M in 1933 and 1936, respectively. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the U-M in 1940 prior to starting a long career as an internist in Benton Harbor. During World War II he served as an Air Force flight surgeon.
In announcing the gift, Mrs. Ruth said, “We’ve had it in the back of our minds for some time to do this. We recognize the need to give support to medical students who need it.” She says the act of charity has been “great fun” for her family.
“The Medical School is tremendously grateful to Griswold and Margery Ruth for establishing these endowments,” Medical School Dean Giles G. Bole said. “Their generosity will create an enduring legacy in their honor at Michigan, strengthening the faculty and benefiting generations of future students.”
The Medical School currently is involved in a comprehensive campaign to raise $250 million for facilities, endowment and ongoing program support.
