Groups schedule Latin American Week activities
Music, film, dance and art highlight the University’s celebration of Latin American Week today through April 7.
The celebration begins with the screening of Flames in Forest, an Ecuadoran film about human rights and struggles of indigenous people in the Amazon, at 6 p.m. today (April 3) at Trotter House. A talk by Fabian Muenala of the Confederacion de Nacionalidad Indigena del Ecuador will precede the film.
Officials from the United Farm Workers will help honor Cesar Chavez and La Voz Mexicana with the dedication of the Cesar Chavez Lounge at Mosher-Jordan residence hall at 4 p.m. Tuesday (April 4).
Peruvian artist Mel Rosas, who teaches at Wayne State University, will discuss his recent work in a slide presentation 4:30&endash;6 p.m. Thursday (April 6) in the Pond Room, Michigan Union.
Musician Aden Sur will perform his Latin American folklore at the Latino/a graduation and Hispanic Alumni Council reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alumni Center.
The “Baile Finale,” featuring dance and the Latin music of Benny Cruz and La Buena Vida, will round out the week at 8 p.m. Friday (April 7) in the Pendleton Room, Michigan Union. For ticket information, call the Michigan Union ticket office, 763-8587.
Latin American Week is sponsored by the Hispanic Task Force, Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, Minority Student Services and Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. All events are open to the public.
