John H. Matlock has been appointed assistant vice provost and director of the Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), effective Jan. 1.

Matlock, who has been OAMI director since 1989, will provide support for student academic programs and oversee community affairs, according to Lester P. Monts, vice provost for academic and multicultural affairs.

“Dr. Matlock’s years of experience in the political and community development arenas will provide the wisdom and knowledge necessary to serve our many constituencies, both on and off campus,” Monts says.

Matlock previously served nearly a decade as chief of staff for U.S. Reps. John Conyers of Michigan and Harold Ford of Tennessee. He also has been director of community relations at the U-M and director of institutional research and planning at Tennessee State University.

A Detroit native, Matlock has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ferris State University, a master’s in journalism from the U-M and a Ph.D. from the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education.

Monts said that an associate director will be hired to assist in managing and coordinating OAMI activities.
