Student charged in Internet transmissions
An LS&A sophomore was charged last week in a federal criminal complaint with transmitting a threat to injure a U-M student. U.S. attorney Saul A. Green said the charges arise from a series of transmissions made on the Internet computer network.
Green said the student is charged under a federal law that criminalizes the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of a communication “containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another.”
The U-M Department of Public Safety was made aware of the transmission on Jan. 19, and conducted an initial investigation. Continuing work on the case is being handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Former employee to be sentenced on embezzlement charge
An employee of the Department of Communication, who has since left the University, pled no-contest to a charge of co-mingling department funds with her own, a felony that carries a sentence of up to two years. She will appear in court March 15 for sentencing. The Department of Public Safety and the University’s audit office have detected a loss in excess of $36,000.
Nurses plead guilty on controlled substance charges
In separate cases, two University Hospital nurses pled guilty last week to possession of a controlled substance. This is a felony that carries a penalty of up to four years in jail. One nurse works on the fifth floor, the other in intensive care. Both appeared for examination Feb. 8 and will be sentenced at the end of March.
Freshman charged in vandalism incident
A charge of malicious destruction of property over $100 is pending in 15th District Criminal Court against an LS&A freshman residing in Bursley Hall. The student allegedly caused a fire that resulted in $1,100 worth of damage to furniture in a fourth-floor lounge last November. The charge is a felony and carries a penalty of up to five years in jail.
