Student robbed on Fletcher on a Sunday afternoon
A female student was struck on the head and robbed while walking in the 200 block of Fletcher Street at 2 p.m. Oct. 9.
The alleged assailant was apprehended 15 minutes later, after being spotted by DPS and Housing Security officers, reports Capt. James R. Smiley.
The 40-year-old man, who is not affiliated with the University and has an extensive criminal history, was arraigned Oct. 10 in 15th District Court on charges of unarmed robbery. While his case is pending, he is in the Washtenaw County Jail because he could not post $100,000 bond.
Unarmed robbery is a felony with a penalty of up to 15 years in jail.
Computer equipment stolen
Computer equipment valued at more than $25,000 was stolen from the Kresge Hearing Research Building the weekend of Oct. 1–2. Smiley says the theft was reported Oct. 3.
It appears entry was gained by forcing a door. DPS officers are still investigating.
Crime committed 8 years ago, reported this summer
The crime map published in the Sept. 19 Record included a first-degree criminal sexual conduct report for an incident that occurred eight years ago but was not reported to DPS until this summer.
The rape came to light when a 17-year-old Ann Arbor woman told a counselor about the incident that had occurred when she lived in Family Housing. The counselor reported the incident to DPS because it occurred within DPS’s jurisdiction. DPS reported the complaint as part of its Uniform Crime Report to the federal government.
Statistical information for the federal crime report is used for the Record’s monthly crime map.
To better inform readers, starting this month, the Record has added a third column to the “Crimes Reported” chart to indicate incidents that occurred prior to the reporting period.
Former student arrested on bad-check charges
A 27-year-old former student was arrested and arraigned Oct. 5 for writing $1,800 worth of checks on a closed bank account in July.
The man was released on bond. Writing checks on a non-existent account is a felony with a penalty of up to two years in jail, Smiley says.
Huron High student arrested for larceny
A 17-year-old female Huron High School student was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Sept. 15 on North Campus and charged with larceny of personal property from a vehicle.
A Family Housing resident watched the woman and a male accomplice trying to gain entrance to a vehicle. When DPS officers apprehended the woman, they found she had a radio stolen from another vehicle in her possession.
Larceny of personal property from a vehicle is a felony with a penalty of up to five years in jail.
