Terry Savage, Chicago Sun-Times financial columnist and author of Terry Savage’s New Money Strategies for the ’90s, will give the University’s fifth annual Mullin-Welch Lecture on “Making Money Work” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 12) in Hale Auditorium. It is sponsored by the Center for the Education of Women.
Savage, who anchors the “Money Talks” segment of “CBS This Morning,” also will meet with students to present “Money 101: A Free Introduction to What YOU Need to Know About Money and Finance” at 5 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Wedge Room, West Quad Residence Hall.
Savage graduated from the U-M in 1967. Her financial expertise comes not only from 12 years of reporting but also from personal experience. She began her career as a stockbroker and was a founding member—and the first woman member—of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. She was editor of a weekly investment letter, Options Trading Strategies, and is a registered investment adviser for both stocks and commodities.
Savage has won numerous awards for her television reporting. In 1987, the National Press Club gave her its “Outstanding Consumer Journalism” award for her series on “Mortgage Finance Rip-Offs.” She also received the Peter Lisagor and Pannell Kerr Forster awards for her reports on the 1987 stock market crash, and an Emmy for her special on money, “It Doesn’t Grow on Trees.”
