The 34th Werner E. Bachmann Memorial Lecture, featuring Paul A. Wender of Stanford University, will be hosted by the Department of Chemistry at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Room 1210, Chemistry Building. Wender’s topic will be “The Chemistry-Medicine Continuum: Synthetic, Biological, and Computer Studies on New Medicinal Leads.”
Wender is the Bergstrom Professor of Chemistry at Stanford and a member of the Program for Molecular and Genetic Medicine. He received his B.S. from Wilkes College in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1973. He served as a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow with Gilbert Stork at Columbia University. He is an internationally renowned organic chemist and was the first recipient of the Associated Students of Stanford University Teaching Award. He has also received the Hoagland Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and the Bing Teaching Award at Stanford.
The Bachmann Memorial Lecture is given annually by a distinguished organic chemist in memory of Werner E. Bachmann, a member of the Department of Chemistry from 1925 until his death in 1951. Bachmann was the Moses Gomberg University Professor and collected many honors, including the King’s Medal from the British government, a Certificate of Merit from the president of the United States, the Naval Ordnance Award and membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Bachmann’s development of a large-scale process for the preparation of the powerful explosive RDX had a major impact on U.S. resources during World War II.
Wender will also present a departmental seminar titled “Toward the Ideal Synthesis: Mechanistic and Synthetic Studies on Novel Organometallic and Photochemical Strategy Level Reactions.” at 4 p.m.Oct. 19 in Room 1640, Willard Henry Dow Laboratory.
The Bachmann Lecture is intended for a relatively broad audience; the departmental seminar will be considerably more specialized.
