Basu wins fellowship from Hoover Institution
Susanto Basu, assistant professor of economics, has received a post-doctoral National and Peace Fellowship from the Hoover Institution for 1994–95. The fellowships provide scholars an opportunity to spend one year at the Hoover Institution to conduct independent research on historical and public policy issues of the 20th century.
Keener named a fellow of mathematical group
Robert W. Keener, professor of statistics, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) for his “major contributions to sequential design of experiments and renewal theory, and for editorial service to the IMS.”
Oaklander’s book published
The New Theory of Time, edited and with introductions by L. Nathan Oaklander and Quentin Smith, has been published by the Yale University Press. Oaklander is professor and chair of philosophy at U-M-Flint. “A collection of essays of unfailing interest and marked originality. Mandatory reading for anyone interested in the metaphysics of time and the semantics of tense,” noted Ruth Barcan Marcus, Yale University.
Heart association honors Julius
Stevo Julius, chief of the Hypertension Division, Department of Internal Medicine, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Hypertension from the Council for High Blood Pressure Research of the American Heart Association, the highest honor it can bestow on an individual.
Hitchcock receives award
Peter F. Hitchcock, assistant professor of ophthalmology and of anatomy and cell biology, has received a $50,000 William and Mary Greve International Research Scholars Award, one of only six offered annually by Research to Prevent Blindness, the world’s leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. The award recognizes outstanding young ophthalmic scientists conducting research of exceptional merit and promise.
Roehl is consultant to North Central Association
Richard W. Roehl, U-M-Dearborn associate dean and professor of economics, has been named a consultant-evaluator for the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Society honors work of Whitehouse
Rosanne Whitehouse, ambulatory care administrator of special programs at the Medical Center, has received the 1994 Society for Ambulatory Care Professional Quality Award. The award recognizes efforts by Whitehouse and the Medical Center to improve the pathology test requisition process.
AIA honors Beckley
Robert M. Beckley, dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, has received the 1994 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Michigan’s President’s Award for “recognition of outstanding contributions through education.”
