U celebrates ‘De Colores—Our Cultural Richness’

“De Colores—Our Cultural Richness” is the theme of this year’s Hispanic/Latino/Latina Heritage Celebration. Events are planned this month and throughout October.
Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Office of Academic and Multicultural Initiatives, “De Colores—Our Cultural Richness” features lectures, professional development workshops and cultural programs.
Upcoming events include:
Tuesday (Sept. 27), New Student Welcome, 7 p.m., Trotter House.
Oct. 6, reading by Columbian-American poet Maurice Kilwein Guevara, author of Post Mortem, 5 p.m., Rackham Amphitheater. Co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Latino/Latina Studies Program.
Oct. 11, “Latino/Latina Health in the U.S. and Health Care Reform: Challenges for the 21st Century,” Robert E. Torres, assistant professor of health administration, Eastern Michigan University, 7 p.m., Kuenzel Room, Michigan Union.
Oct. 12, “Hispanics/Latinos/Latinas in the U.S.,” Jane Garcia, community service specialist, 2 p.m., Executive Conference Room, LS&A Building.
Oct. 14, “Prisoners of Colonialism,” Ronald Fernandez, professor of sociology, University of Connecticut, 4 p.m., West Lecture Hall, third floor, Rackham Building.
Oct. 15, Book signing with Ronald Fernandez, author of Prisoners of Colonialism: The Struggle for Justice in Puerto Rico, 11 a.m., Borders Books & Music.

Oct. 16, Double Speak, a workshop with the Nuyorican Poets Cafe focusing on poetic techniques that incorporate multilingual phrases and imagery with a focus on Spanish and English, 10:30–11:30 a.m., Trotter House.
Oct. 23, Sol y Canto, a show celebrating Latin American heritage, 8 p.m., the Ark. Tickets are $10.50 for students and senior citizens, $11.50 for others.

Oct. 27, Chilean guitarist Oscar Lopez, 8 p.m., the Ark. Tickets are $9 for students and senior citizens, $10 for others.
Oct. 29, Annual Juan Tienda Scholarship Banquet, 6:30–8:30 p.m., University Club, Michigan Union, sponsored by the Hispanic Law Students Association, 668-6319. A dance will follow, 8:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m., in the Michigan Union Ballroom.
