Beginning this fall, students living in residence halls can tune in to what’s happening on campus simply by turning on their television, thanks to the new Michigan InfoChannel, a 24-hour electronic bulletin board.

Operated by the Housing Division, a unit of the Office of Student Affairs, the InfoChannel provides information on residence hall programs and services, student job openings, activities and services offered by University departments, and meetings and events sponsored by student organizations. It also features academic, emergency and public service announcements.

“The overall purpose of the Michigan InfoChannel is to enhance the quality of life for students residing in University housing,” says Michael Clancy, Michigan InfoChannel manager. “Through information, education and entertainment, the channel will inform residents of a wide range of campus and community events and activities.”

Clancy says the InfoChannel, which airs on channel 8 within the residence halls, is free to students, even if they don’t subscribe to cable television. Announcements submitted by student groups and campus units for broadcast also are free.

In addition to the Michigan InfoChannel, the Housing Division operates a free cable movie channel, featuring three films daily, and three channels reserved for educational videos and student-produced programming by the campuswide student video group, WOLV Student Television.

Clancy says examples of educational videos currently airing include use of the residence hall voice-mail system,

U-M Health Service segments on various health topics, and a video presented by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center.

Those interested in broadcasting information on the Michigan InfoChannel should call 763-8129. Information, which will air for three days, must be submitted at least one week before an event date.
