Wayne Butler appointed to NCTE committee
Wayne M. Butler, lecturer in English, has been appointed to the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Committee on Instructional Technology. The committee is studying such emerging technologies as word processors, computers and video-discs and ways to integrate them into English and language arts curricula and teacher education programs.
Maynard selected top ROTC instructor in the nation
Lt. Sevren Maynard, instructor in the U-M’s Navy ROTC unit, received the Col. Leo A. Codd Memorial Award from the American Defense Preparedness Association. The award recognizes the outstanding ROTC instructor in the nation. Criteria include performance of primary duties and evaluation of teaching, collateral duties, civilian and university activities, counseling abilities, contributions to the unit and previous recognition for achievement at the unit.
Moody receives alumni award
Charles D. Moody, executive director of the South Africa Initiatives Office (SAIO), has received the 1994 Merit Award from the Northwestern Univer-sity Alumni Association for his distinguished services and contributions to education. As director of SAIO, Moody has been instrumental in the U-M’s efforts to establish cooperative programs with universities in South Africa.
Van Vlack selected ASEE Fellow
Lawrence H. Van Vlack, professor emeritus of materials engineering, has been selected a fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the society and to the field.
Thornton appointed Woodrow Wilson Center Fellow
J. Mills Thornton, professor of history, is one of 32 Fellows appointed by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars for 1994–95. His project: “Segregation and Community: Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma, 1940–65.” Created by Congress in 1968, the center commemorates “both the scholarly depth and the public concerns of Woodrow Wilson through the generation of scholarship at the most advanced level.”
