Gov. John Engler to give commencement address

Gov. John M. Engler will be the main speaker at the University’s winter commencement on Sunday (Dec. 12).

Engler and three others—Carl A. Gerstacker, Elie Wiesel and Roger W. Wilkins—will receive honorary degrees.

Gerstacker, Wiesel and Wilkins will make brief remarks.

Some 2,000 students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this winter. The graduation ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in Crisler Arena.

Engler, who will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, was elected the 46th governor of Michigan in 1990. In 1970, at the age of 22, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives and to the Senate in 1978, where he served as Majority Leader in 1983–90.

Engler also serves as the co-chair of the Welfare Reform Leadership Team, which advises the President. He is a member of the National Governors’ Association Executive Committee and serves on the National Education Goals Panel.

A native of Mount Pleasant, Engler received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Michigan State University and a law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
