Computer theft under investigation
University Police are investigating the April 9 breaking and entering and theft of eight computers valued at more than $37,000 from the G.G. Brown Building.
Lt. James R. Smiley asks that individuals with information about the theft contact the Department of Public Safety (DPS) detective bureau, 763-3434.
Clerk charged with embezzlement
A 37-year old clerk at the Riverview Outpatient Clinic was arrested March 18 and charged with embezzlement over $100. The woman, who began working at the U-M in October, stole the money from patient receipts when patients paid their bills in cash.
The woman waived a preliminary examination in Ann Arbor’s 15th District Court and is awaiting trial in Washtenaw County Circuit Court.
Embezzlement of over $100 is a felony with a penalty of up to 10 years in jail.
Arrests up slightly for this year’s Hash Bash
Forty-six individuals, including one U-M student and three juveniles who are age 16 or under, were arrested April 3 at the annual Hash Bash on the Diag. Forty arrests were made last year.
Smiley says all of the arrests this year involved possession or use of marijuana or alcohol. Four were arrested for sales on University property and five were arrested for open intoxicants.
Cases involving the juveniles are being handled by the Washtenaw County Probate Court. The suspected narcotics that were confiscated have been sent to the State Police Crime Lab in Northville for analysis. If it is confirmed that the substances are controlled substances, warrants will be requested for those who were arrested at the Hash Bash, Smiley says.
Teen stabs another teen at Crisler Arena
A 17-year-old Ypsilanti man has been charged with felonious assault in the April 5 stabbing of another 17-year-old man from Ann Arbor at Crisler Arena.
The assault occurred around 8 p.m. as the crowd was starting to gather for the NCAA basketball tournament game between the U-M and the University of North Carolina, which was shown on a large screen at Crisler.
Smiley says the assault near a concession stand was part of an ongoing feud between the two young men.
The assailant, who has been bound over to Washtenaw County Circuit Court for arraignment, was remanded to the Wash-tenaw County Jail in lieu of posting a $2,500 bond.
In a post-game incident, a 17-year-old Huron High School student, who had become separated from his friends, was jumped and beaten by a group of youths at 1 a.m. April 6 in the 800 block of South University. The victim suffered a compressed neck injury from being kicked by his assailants. He was admitted to Univ-ersity Hospital and has since been released.
Smiley says University Police are working with video footage of post-game events to try to identify the assailants.
