Gibala honored for paper
Ronald Gibala, chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received the Outstanding Materials Division Paper Award for 1992, along with co-authors Ronald D. Noebe of the NASA Lewis Research Center and Ph.D. candidate Amit Misra. “Plastic Flow and Fracture of B2 NiAl-based Intermetallic Alloys Containing a Ductile Second Phase” was published in the journal ISIJ International.
Tillinghast to conduct research in Northern Ireland
Richard W. Tillinghast, professor of English, has received a travel grant from the British Council to support research in Northern Ireland this summer. He will be doing research at two country houses, Castle Ward and Mount Stewart, in connection with a project on the “significance of the Big House in Anglo-Irish literature.”
Gobetti translation published
Thomas Hobbes and the Natural Law Tradition, by Norberto Bobbio and translated by Daniela Gobetti, has been published by the University of Chicago Press. Gobetti is professor of political theory.
McFee elected to AAA board
Regent Shirley M. McFee was elected to a three-year term as a director of AAA Michigan at its March meeting. Also elected to a three-year term was Regent Emeritus Lawrence B. Lindemer.
Weiss receives AFCRF Young Investigator Award
Stephen J. Weiss, the E. Gifford and Love Barnett Upjohn Professor of Internal Medicine, has received the 1993 American Federation for Clinical Research Foundation (AFCRF) Young Investigator Award. Award criteria include originality and innovative insight into a major scientific problem as well as the significance of the work to an area of research.
Angus’s research receives grant
“High School Curriculum Change in Michigan, 1925–50,” a research project headed by David L. Angus, has received a $7,500 grant from the Spencer Foundation. Angus is professor of education.
Streeter’s book published
Fluid Transients in Systems, by E. Benjamin Wylie and Victor L. Streeter, has been published by Prentice Hall. Streeter is professor emeritus of hydraulics.
Thorson cited for leadership
Jayne Thorson, executive assistant, Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, has received the Leadership for a New Century Award from the National Association for Women in Education, recognizing her “outstanding leadership in sexual orientation issues.”
SAE honors Huelke
Donald F. Huelke, professor of anatomy and interim director, U-M Transportation Research Institute, has received the Distinguished Speaker Award from the Engineering Meetings Board of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
Schaum’s book published
Wallace Stevens & the Feminine by Melita Schaum has been published by the University of Alabama Press. Schaum is professor of English at U-M-Dearborn. The collection of 10 essays explores various aspects of the feminine in Stevens’ writings and his life.
Silver member of national breast cancer group
Dorit Adler Silver has been appointed to the President’s Cancer Panel Special Commission on Breast Cancer. Silver is associate professor of radiology and associate director of the Division of Breast Imaging. The Commission is studying the state of breast cancer research, detection and treatment and will develop a report on ways to enhance the National Cancer Institute’s efforts to reduce breast cancer’s morbidity and mortality.
Kearney heads AEFA
Philip Kearney, professor of education, is president of the American Education Finance Association (AEFA). The 600-member organization facilitates communication among academicians, researchers, policy-makers, administrators and teachers in the school finance field.
