The following activities have been scheduled in conjunction with SERVE Week on the Ann Arbor campus. SERVE Week, sponsored by Project SERVE, offers opportunities for members of the University community to “sample” volunteer activities to help them decide if they want to become involved in such programs, as well as an opportunity for recognizing individuals already involved in community service activities.
Monday (March 29)
—Toiletries Drive, all residence halls will have boxes in the lobby for the contribution of toiletries that will be donated to local shelters. The drive will continue through the week. Sponsored by the Residence Hall Association.
Tuesday (March 30)
—Fashion Extravaganza, 7–8:30 p.m., Pendleton Room, Michigan Union. Admission: two canned goods or $2. Show benefits the homeless and will feature spring clothing lines of local and Briarwood merchants modeled by U-M students. Gift certificates will be awarded to audience members. Sponsored by the University Activities Center.
—STD Workshop, 8 p.m. Main Lounge, West Quadrangle. Informational workshop designed to educate individuals about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Sponsored by Future Physicians for Social Responsibility.
Wednesday (March 31)
—Sexual Assault and People with Disabilities, 7–8:30 p.m., African-American Lounge, South Quadrangle. Presentation by Verna Spayth, longtime disabilities rights activist. Sponsored by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Program.
—SLEAP: Dreams for Alternative Education, 7 p.m., Ballroom, Michigan Union. High school students performing poetry and prose in a multimedia setting. At 10 p.m., join Frank Allison in concert to benefit the alternative education program. Sponsored by Students Living Educational Alternatives Program.
Thursday (April 1)
—Work at a Detroit Public High School, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., meet at Circle Drive, Michigan Union. Work on tutoring and mentoring projects with inner city youth. Find out how StEPP is making a difference. Sponsored by Student Education Peer Program.
—Riverview Senior Center, 5:30–7 p.m. This project includes participating in a sing-along and other activities with the senior citizens who live at Riverview. Sponsored by the SERVE Board.
Saturday, April 3
—Class-X, 5 p.m., 2518 Frieze Building. A performance that is a quest to bring all components of music together, done in a youthful and energetic way. Sponsored by Children’s Theater.
—Work in a Detroit Public High School, 8 a.m.–1 p.m. See Thursday description.
—Ann Arbor Housing Commission (AAHC), 1:30–4:30 p.m., Campus Chapel, Washtenaw Court. AAHC is a non-profit, government-run housing project that provides low income housing for seniors, those with disabilities and families. The project will include a variety of household chores. Sponsored by Korean Campus Crusade for Christ.
—Huron River Cleanup, 1–4 p.m. Meet at Circle Drive, Michigan Union. Sponsored by Mortar Board.
Sunday, April 4
—Ticket America, 1 p.m., Front steps of the Michigan Union. This program is in response to gas-guzzling cars, increased dependence on automobiles and general wasteful driving trends. Help put out information “tickets” on windshields of cars all over Ann Arbor. Sponsored by ENACT and Project SERVE.
