A five-part lecture series titled “New Paradigms of Global Security” begins at 4 p.m. Friday (March 19) in Room 100, Hutchins Hall, Law School.
Economist Gita Sen, professor of population and development studies at Harvard University, will discuss “Expanding the Concept of Global Security: Gender and Human Development.” Sen is cofounder of Development Alternatives with Women in a New Era (DAWN) and author of Development, Crises and Alternative Visions.
The series will examine the problems of global insecurity associated with environmental degradation, poverty, and militarism and explore new strategies and
conceptual frameworks for addressing these problems at local, international and transnational levels.
The other lectures, all beginning at 4 p.m. in Hutchins Hall, include:
—March 24, Gunther Handl, professor of law, Wayne State University, and a member of the Austrian delegation to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and editor in chief of the Yearbook of International Environmental Law, “Environmental Security and the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development,” Room 150.
—April 1, Mark Levy, professor of political science, Princeton University, and author of Institutions for the Earth: Sources of Effective International Protection, “Lessons from the Study of Global Environmental Politics,” Room 100.
—April 7, J. Ann Tickner, professor of political science, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., and author of Gender in International Relations: Feminist Perspectives on Achieving Global Order, “Expanding the Boundaries of Global Security: A Feminist Perspective,” Room 150.
—April 12, Richard Falk, professor of international law and practice, Princeton University, and author of Explorations at the Edge of Time: The Prospects for World Order, “Prospects for Global Civil Society,” Room 100.
