Advance registration forms are now available for the 11th annual Career Conference for People of Color, which will be held Feb. 26. This year’s conference theme is “Globally Pulling our Cultures Together: Positioning Ourselves to Empower, Impact and Excel.”
The deadline for advance registration is Dec. 4. This year there is a $10 fee for University faculty, staff and students and a $30 fee for those outside the University. Lunch, $15, is available only to those who register in advance.
In past years as many as 67 University units and departments have contributed to the conference—last year a total of $11,000. But this year, according to Lynne E. Dumas, program coordinator in the Affirmative Action Office, departments have been unable to contribute.
Sponsored by the Women of Color Task Force, the conference focuses on professional, skill, management and personal development for people of color. Participants will be able to choose from approximately 35 two-hour workshops.
Helen Zia, executive editor of Ms. magazine, will be the morning keynote speaker. She is president of the New York chapter of the Asian-American Journalists Association, and was involved in the civil rights case that is the subject of the film Who Killed Vincent Chin?
Sonia Sanchez, a contributing editor to Black Scholar and former educator at San Francisco State College, will speak in the afternoon.
The annual fashion show, always a popular program item, will be at 3 p.m. this year, leaving the lunch time free for networking and discussion.
Co-chairs for the conference are Tamaria E. Conner, academic secretary, University Health Service, and Elizabeth Thomas, office assistant in the Affirmative Action Office. The conference is sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs, the Affirmative Action Office, the Medical Campus Human Resource Department and the University Human Resource Development.
