Media critic Jean Kilbourne will kick off the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (Nov. 8–13) at U-M with a presentation on alcohol advertising 8 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 8) in Auditorium 3, Modern Languages Building.
The writer, lecturer and documentary filmmaker will present “Under the Influence: The Pushing of Alcohol Via Advertising,” a lecture and slide presentation on the misleading effects of alcohol advertising. She also will discuss media censorship on behalf of the alcohol industry and the special issues of alcoholics, young people, women, minorities and children of alcoholics.
A visiting scholar at Wellesley College, Kilbourne is on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Alcoholism and has twice received the Lecturer of the Year award from the National Association of Campus Activities. She has testified before Congress and served as a member of former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop’s Workshop on Drunk Driving. Kilbourne has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs including “The Today Show” and “Oprah Winfrey Show.”
