Ward heads pathology group
Peter A. Ward, chair of the Department of Pathology, has been named president of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. The 6,000-member organization is the North American component of the International Academy of Pathology.
Book on race , environment edited by Bryant, Mohai
Race and the Incidence of Environmental Hazards, edited by Bunyan I. Bryant Jr., associate professor of natural resources, and Paul Mohai, assistant professor of natural resources, has been published by Westview Press, Boulder, Colo. The book includes 16 articles by scholars of color and environmental activists from throughout the country.
Alfred honored for work on student development
Richard L. Alfred, associate professor of education, has received the first Medallion Award, jointly presented by the National Council on Student Development, American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. The award recognizes “excellence in research and scholarly contributions to the field of student development in community colleges.”
Kileny elected fellow
Paul Kileny, associate professor of oto-laryngology and director of audiology and electrophysiology, has been elected a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, one of the association’s highest forms of recognition.
Man to serve facilities association
Robert M. Man, coordinator of space analysis in the Office of Space Analysis, has been named to a one-year term as president of the Higher Education Facilities Management Association. Fifteen colleges and universities are represented by the organization.
UCLA honors Gilman
Sid Gilman, chair of the Department of Neurology, has received a Professional Achievement Award from his alma mater, the University of California, Los Angeles. Gilman is a specialist on diseases of the nervous system and the effects of alcoholism on the brain.
Pavlidis receives Humboldt Award
Dimitris Pavlidis, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has received the Humboldt Research Award for Distinguished Senior U.S. Scientists. The award recognizes his accomplishments in research and teaching, and “is intended to promote scientific cooperation between research institutions of Germany and the United States.”
Biesecker awarded fellowship
Leslie G. Biesecker, lecturer in pediatrics and communicable diseases, has received a Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the Aplastic Anemia Foundation of America. The non-profit organization was founded in 1984 to encourage research into the causes and treatments of the disease, support patients and their families and educate the public about the disease.
