Thomas Byrne Edsall and Mary D. Edsall, authors of Chain Reaction: The Impact of Race, Rights and Taxes on American Politics, will deliver the Ben Yablonky Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Wallace House, home of the Michigan Journalism Fellows Program.
Thomas Edsall has been a national political reporter at the Washington Post for the past six years. He previously worked at the Providence Journal Bulletin and the Baltimore Sun. His other books include The New Politics of Inequality and Power and Money. He co-edited The Reagan Legacy.
In addition to collaborating with her husband on Chain Reaction, Mary Edsall edited his other books. She is also a short story writer whose works have appeared in the Antioch Review and the North American Review.
The Ben Yablonky Lecture is made possible by a gift from the Yablonky family. Ben Yablonky was a journalist, labor activist and educator who founded the Michigan Journalism Fellows program in 1973.
A reporter for the Chicago Herald and Examiner and the Chicago Sun, Yablonky was instrumental in organizing the Newspaper Guild. In the 1940s, he worked for the newspaper PM. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1945, and taught at New York University before joining the U-M as professor of journalism in 1957. He died in 1991.
