2 skateboarders arrested for breaking and entering
Two boys, ages 14 and 16, were arrested Aug. 14 by University Police for breaking and entering automobiles in the Thompson Street Parking Structure.
U-M Police Lt. James R. Smiley says the youths, who are from Chelsea and Brighton, are suspects in at least 30 other incidents. They have been turned over to their parents and the Juvenile Division of Washtenaw County Probate Court.
The teens were apprehended during a routine patrol following complaints about youths skateboarding in the parking structure.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is actively following skateboarder complaints, Smiley says. “They are damaging property and we believe they are a factor in a lot of campus crime,” he adds.
Stockwell Hall employee arrested for embezzlement
A 30-year-old Stockwell Hall residence hall assistant has been charged with embezzlement over $100. She was arrested Aug. 21 following an investigation of an $850 discrepancy in residence hall accounts.
Police apprehend prison escapee at U-M Hospitals
A 33-year-old escapee from a state parole camp near Pontiac was arrested Aug. 28 at U-M Hospitals where he was visiting his 10-year-old daughter who had been hit by a car two days before. She died later that day.
Smiley said Hospitals personnel became suspicious of the man due to his behavior when he visited his daughter Aug. 27. DPS learned that the man, who Smiley describes as a “career criminal,” had escaped from the parole camp a month earlier. He was serving time for larceny from a building.
University Police and Hospitals Security turned the man over to the Department of Corrections.
Move-in marred by death
The brother of a graduate student from Albuquerque, N.M., collapsed Sept. 6 while helping his sister move into housing on North Campus. DPS and an ambulance responded to a call for assistance. However, the brother died of cardiopulmonary arrest at the hospital.
Bike thief nabbed
A 20-year-old man who is not affiliated with the University was arrested by DPS Aug. 20 for possessing a stolen mountain bike. He has been charged with larceny over $100 and receiving and concealing stolen property.
Smiley says University Police officers noticed him and an associate walking along the railroad tracks behind the Track and Tennis Building with a bike that had been stolen a week earlier. The two dropped the bike and ran when they saw the officers, who are still seeking the associate.
Man charged with felonious assault following Diag fight
A 22-year-old man has been charged with felonious assault for an incident that occurred at 6:30 p.m. July 27 on the northwest corner of the Diag. The suspect was arguing with another man over a watch when the suspect’s wife handed him two steak knives from her purse, which he used in the assault.
Smiley says University Police are still investigating the incident. Neither the suspect nor the victim is affiliated with the University.
Vandals hitting bus shelters
University Police are investigating six incidents of malicious destruction of property during the last two weeks of August in which glass panes in bus shelters were broken. Each pane costs about $500.
DPS officers, who suspect juveniles are responsible for the vandalism, would appreciate any information that could lead to the arrest of the vandals. Call Smiley at 763-3434.
