Two panel discussions, sponsored by the Center for the Education of Women and the Law School, that are part of the Campaign for Michigan kickoff activities, are open to the public. They will be presented 2:30–5 p.m. Sept. 18 in Mendelssohn Theatre.
Panelists for “Women and Justice: Where Are We Now?” will address the disparity between women’s legal equality and social inequality, including the latest decisions concerning sexual harassment in the workplace, the impact of the recent Supreme Court decision on reproductive rights, and the most difficult legal issues facing women today concerning divorce, custody and domestic violence.
Panelists are law Profs. Catharine A. MacKinnon and Christina B. Whitman and Judge Patricia Micklow.
Four alumnae, who illustrate the tradition of breaking barriers in almost every sphere of human activity, will tell their stories in “Expanding Horizons,” focusing on what led them to their current interests and achievements, their struggles along the way, and who helped them realize their goals.
Panelists are Dolores Cross, the first woman appointed president of Chicago State University; Sara Duvall, executive producer of the film Fried Green Tomatoes; Cynthia Egolf-Sham Rao, a recent guest conductor at the Tanglewood Music Festival and the first woman to enroll in the University’s doctoral program in orchestral conducting; and Alexa Canady, director of neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
