Spouses or partners of recently appointed faculty and staff will get some help in finding work through a program being piloted by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Colleen Dolan-Greene, assistant vice president for academic affairs-personnel, notes that her office regularly helps the spouses or partners of faculty, and occasionally of staff, find employment in Southeast Michigan.
Her office has contracted with Jannotta, Bray & Associates, a national career management firm for a free, three-part program to help these individuals find full-time, part-time or volunteer positions.
The program includes an orientation seminar Thursday (Sept. 10), three-day job skills workshop (Sept. 14–16) and follow-up individual counseling sessions.
The orientation seminar will include information on the Southeast Michigan job market and opportunities within the University, general information about Southeast Michigan, techniques to help individuals make their move a positive experience and an exercise to help individuals assess their strengths and skills.
The skills workshop will provide participants with the tools, techniques and strategies that lead to appropriate new positions. There will be practice sessions in making contacts, interviewing and writing effective letters and resumes.
Individual follow-up counseling will be available for participants to discuss their job hunting strategies; potential contacts, including networking; research; and progress.
Dolan-Greene notes that a letter about the program has been sent to newly appointed faculty, but some may have been missed.
