The University of Michigan will sell the University Tower building on the UM-Flint campus to Genesee County for $8.5 million. The Board of Regents approved the sale Dec. 9.
The 10-story facility is a former bank building at 324 S. Saginaw St. that the university purchased in 2016 with the intent of providing additional academic classroom and administrative space for UM-Flint.
U-M bought the building, which sits near UM-Flint’s Riverfront Center, for $6 million from First Merit Bank and invested $2.4 million to separate the building so it could operate independently of physical interconnections with other buildings and to address infrastructure needs.
Due to changing priorities at the UM-Flint campus, there is no longer a need for the building. Proceeds will be used to help fund other capital projects on the Flint campus.
The purchase was approved Dec. 1 by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. The county has indicated it will use the building to consolidate offices currently in various locations.
