An electrical fire that occurred on Level 3 of University Hospital at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday resulted in Michigan Medicine temporarily reducing the capacity of its operating rooms on Wednesday and rescheduling some procedures.
A message sent to Michigan Medicine employees Tuesday evening said the Ann Arbor Fire Department responded and immediately extinguished the fire.
“Everyone is safe, and the fire is out, but there was smoke that impacted clinical operations. Smoke is clearing from inpatient units,” the message said.
The message said the fire department has determined the building is safe and hospital personnel were working toward resuming normal operations. Patients and staff in affected areas were safely relocated.
Fans were used in some patient-care units to aid ventilation, but there is no danger to the air quality, Michigan Medicine said.
Water damage was reported in a few locations and the facilities team was working to assess, clean and reopen areas as soon as possible, the employee message said.
