Nominations being accepted for research staff awards
The U-M Office of Research is accepting nominations from across all three campuses for its annual Research Technical Staff Recognition Award, Research Administrator Recognition Award and UMOR Exceptional Service Award. Winners of the awards each receive $1,250 and a plaque. Nominations are due Jan. 30, 2020. The Research Technical Staff Recognition Award recognizes research staff members who, independently or along with faculty, have advanced the research mission of their unit in a way that extends beyond the ordinary fulfillment of a position’s duties. The Research Administrator Recognition Award recognizes distinguished service to the research community on campus over a number of years, exemplifying the goals of professional research administration. The UMOR Exceptional Service Award recognizes staff members who have stepped up to meet a specific challenge or performed exceptionally and approached their work in a way that extends beyond the ordinary fulfillment of a position’s duties. U-M launches open online course on opioids
The university has launched a new massive open online course called “Impacting the Opioid Crisis: Prevention, Education, and Practice for Non-Prescribing Providers.” The course is designed to help health workers understand all facets of the opioid crisis and includes information on evidence-based strategies such as prevention, intervention, education and policy. It is designed primarily for nonprescribing health care, behavioral health, dental and social services professionals, as well as graduate-level students in those fields, but other professionals could also benefit, said Karen Farris, the Charles R. Walgreen III Professor of Pharmacy Administration at the College of Pharmacy. The course is available on both the EdX and Coursera online learning platforms. Read more about the new MOOC.
U-M team awarded more than $2 million for Gulf of Mexico work
The Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine recently announced $10.7 million in grant awards for four new projects — including one led by a U-M professor — that are focused on enhancing community resilience in the Gulf of Mexico region of the United States. A team from the School for Environment and Sustainability, in cooperation with the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences & Assessments Program, Headwaters Economics, Stanford University, Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program and the University of Oklahoma, was awarded $2,190,667 for a project that seeks to help cities along the Gulf coast enhance their capacity to cope with stronger and more frequent storms. Maria Carmen Lemos, professor and associate dean for research in SEAS, is the project director.
Nomination deadline extended for Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award
The Academic Women’s Caucus is accepting nominations from the U-M community for the 2020 Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award. The nominating deadline has been extended until Nov. 8. Selection for the award will be based on: academic unit’s progress in establishing and maintaining a concurrent ethnic/racial and gender diversity at the full professor and associate professor rank, tenured and non-tenured; evidence of concurrent ethnic/racial and gender diversifying in junior ranks; and availability of academic unit head to attend the award ceremony. Four-legged staff member joins Department of Psychiatry’s Nyman Unit
The Nyman Family Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness has just added a new wet-nosed staff member, a unit-based facility dog named Parker. Parker is the latest addition to Michigan Medicine’s Paws4Patients program, which began in 2016 and has four other dogs: Denver, Anna, Bindi and Fawn. The dogs are specially trained to work with patients at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and throughout Michigan Medicine. The addition of Parker was made possible through a gift from the Joseph and Karen Krantz Family Charitable Foundation.
