Naomi André, professor of women’s studies, of Afroamerican and African studies, and in the Residential College, LSA, has been appointed Seattle Opera’s inaugural Scholar in Residence. In her role, André will advise Seattle Opera staff and leadership on matters of race and gender in opera, consult in artistic planning as it relates to representation of race and gender, participate in company panel discussions, podcast recordings and contribute essays to opera programs.

Bhargav Bhatt, professor of mathematics, LSA, was recently named a Simons Investigator by the Simons Foundation. Bhatt works in arithmetic algebraic geometry, with an emphasis on questions in positive and mixed characteristic. His research, which often draws on ideas from derived algebraic geometry, has also contributed to the solution of long-standing problems in commutative algebra and algebraic topology.

André Louis Boehman, professor of mechanical engineering, College of Engineering, has been named a member of the 2019 class of American Chemical Society Fellows. The program was created to recognize members of ACS for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and the Society.

Rita C-K Chin, associate dean for academic programs and initiatives, Rackham Graduate School, and professor of history, LSA, has been elected to serve as the vice president of the professional division of the American Historical Association.

Jacques Nör, Donald A. Kerr Collegiate Professor of Dentistry and chair of the Department of Cariology, Restorative Science and Endodontics, School of Dentistry, has been elected vice president of the American Association for Dental Research. Nör also is a professor of biomedical engineering, College of Engineering; and a professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, Medical School.

Ana Catalina Ormsby, associate director of the Center for Educational Outreach, has been selected as a fellow for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities’ Inaugural Presidential Leadership Academy, La Academia de Liderazgo. The program is designed to increase Hispanic representation in presidential positions in higher education.

Several members of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology recently received a variety of honors. Hope Haefner, Harold A. Furlong Professor of Women’s Health and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Medical School, received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. Dee Fenner, Bates Professor of Diseases of Women and Children; chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and of urology, Medical School, received the Rudi Ansbacher Leadership Award for Support of Women in Healthcare at the fifth annual Leadership Summit on Women in Academic Medicine and Healthcare. Carolyn Swenson, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Medical School, received the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Impact Award for most cited publication presented at Society of Gynecologic Surgeons. Michelle Moniz, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Medical School, and other team members won Best Abstract in Women’s Health at the Academy Health Conference.
