BSRB vivarium will expand to accommodate research growth

The A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building has 20,000 square feet of expansion space set aside for future research, which will undergo construction later this year.

The building project, led by the Medical School, was approved Thursday by the Board of Regents.

This project will expand the building’s existing vivarium, the enclosure that houses specimens for scientific observation and research. This will allow for growth related to the relocation of some Life Sciences Institute resources to BSRB, which was built in 2005.

The estimated cost of this new construction is $19 million and includes the architectural, electrical and mechanical work necessary to complete the expansion.

The new space will house research on a wide range of topics, including the impact of the microbiome on human health, underlying causes of serious diseases and various groundbreaking studies in the areas of neurobiology, internal medicine and cancer research.

The architectural and engineering firm of Lord Aeck Sargent will design the expansion and construction is scheduled to be completed in the winter of 2022. There will be no impact on parking from this project.
