Nominations sought for Faculty & Staff Spotlight series
The University Record’s weekly Faculty and Staff Spotlight series celebrates interesting, inspired people in departments across U-M’s three campuses. For Staff Spotlights, the Record seeks candidates with interesting jobs who do not manage full-time employees, and who also do interesting things outside of work. Staff Spotlight example: myumi.ch/6jyVz. Faculty Spotlights should focus on educators who are passionate about their work, who may have an original approach and who may make an impact outside the classroom. Faculty Spotlight example: myumi.ch/65XK2. Please send ideas and nominations to Record Editor Jill Greenberg, [email protected].
Dow Sustainability Fellows Program names 11 to 2019 cohort
Eleven doctoral candidates from eight U-M schools and colleges — representing ten different disciplines — recently were named Dow Sustainability Doctoral Fellows. Each new fellow will receive up to $15,000 to help support their research in the coming year. Dow Masters and Doctoral Fellows come from academic departments throughout the university and seek to become sustainability leaders in academia, business, government, and non-governmental organizations; read about the fellows at myumi.ch/6pP5d. Fellows focus on interdisciplinary approaches to a broad array of sustainability challenges related to water, energy, transportation, built environment, climate change, food, health, human behavior, and others. This is the fifth cohort of Dow Sustainability Doctoral Fellows at U-M, and they will participate in the program from January to December 2019.
New DEI video resources available to faculty and staff
U-M Organizational Learning is releasing a new series of online videos to celebrate the diversity of the university community. The “heritage month” videos, created by diversity trainer Steve Robbins, celebrate occurrences such as Black History Month (February), Women’s History Month (March), and LGBTQ+ Pride Month (June). Each month, a new set of videos will be available for viewing. They can be watched individually or with groups to promote dialogue and understanding of others. The Black History Month videos are available now. To view the videos, visit myumi.ch/6jyol. U-M faculty and staff can sign up to receive notifications of new videos available each month by visiting eepurl.com/gc3eIH. There are also a number of other resources for both individuals and teams on the Organizational Learning website, hr.umich.edu/diversity. Some of those offerings include “DEI: The Basics” online module, “Inclusion Insights” series of 2-minute videos, and in-person sessions on unconscious bias, bystander intervention, disability awareness and more.

Kellogg Eye Center implements enhanced patient safety
Michigan Medicine recently kick-started its journey to zero harm to improve patient safety and reduce the incidence of harm that reaches patients. Part of this journey focuses on creating a culture of safety across the organization and implementing new projects that prioritize patient safety and look to reduce patient harm events. One area already working toward this goal is the Kellogg Eye Center, which has worked on several initiatives over the last year, including implementing daily huddles in all outpatient clinics, reviewing all steps in cataract surgeries and identifying action items to address potential points of error, and creating a patient safety committee.
