EMU launches campaign to welcome international students, scholars
A new video highlighting Eastern Michigan University’s welcoming community for international students is among the elements of a comprehensive effort to more clearly communicate the university’s support of international students, faculty and staff. In addition to Eastern’s new #YouAreWelcomeHere video, available at youtu.be/QTiUm94ifw0, the university also has developed a website, emich.edu/youarewelcomehere, to provide a comprehensive resource to international students and scholars, with links to important offices that support Eastern’s international community on campus.
Joe Shawhan named Michigan Tech hockey coach
Joe Shawhan is the 22nd head coach of Michigan Tech hockey. Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret made the announcement May 30. Shawhan, a 20-year veteran of hockey coaching with more than 10 years in college and 10 years in junior hockey, has been an assistant coach with the Huskies for the past three seasons. “I’m thrilled to introduce Joe Shawhan as the head coach of our historic hockey program,” Sanregret said. “He has been an instrumental part of our success over the last three seasons and winning has followed him in every program in which he has been a part.” Shawhan succeeds Mel Pearson, who was named head coach of U-M’s ice hockey program in April.
OU receives AT&T grant to support K-12 STEM workshops
The Oakland University Foundation has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the AT&T Aspire Program. The grant is specifically targeted to support K-12 STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Outreach Workshops for high school students offered by the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Pawley Lean Institute at Oakland University.

NASA names solar mission after UChicago physicist
NASA has named the first mission to fly a spacecraft directly into the sun’s atmosphere in honor of Eugene Parker, a pioneering physicist at the University of Chicago. The Parker Solar Probe will launch next summer on a mission to fly within 4 million miles of the sun’s surface to study the star with unprecedented precision. Parker, the S. Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Physics, is best known for developing the concept of solar wind — the stream of electrically charged particles emitted by the sun. He was honored May 31 at a public celebration.
