NSF awards MSU $122.5M for operation of cyclotron laboratory
A cooperative agreement between Michigan State University and the National Science Foundation will result in up to $122.5 million in continued funding over five years for the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The agreement will fund forefront research in nuclear and accelerator science and continue operation of the NSCL as one of the world’s flagship nuclear science research facilities.
Model UN team at OSU wins first place at international conference
For the third time in four years, Oakland University’s Model United Nations team took first place overall at the Lake Erie International Model UN Conference. More than 200 students from 12 schools competed at the conference, which took place in Huron, Ohio. Students debated numerous issues, including the crisis in Syria, the Syrian refugee crisis, promotion of clean energy and smart agriculture, limits on military spending and the first Gulf War.

AAU reaches out to support DREAMers
Mary Sue Coleman, president of the Association of American Universities, says the association that represents the nation’s top research universities, including the University of Michigan, will work with the incoming administration to support DREAMer college students. “We appreciate President-elect Trump’s comments regarding DREAMers — young people who were brought to this country by their families as children. Many of them have never known life outside the United States and are now working hard to earn college degrees. As the president-elect said, this is a situation that calls for a humanitarian approach. We stand ready to work with the incoming administration as it seeks to implement such an approach, which we hope will permit students to continue their education and contribute to American excellence.” Coleman is a former U-M president.
University of Minnesota begins Transgender Oral History Project
The University of Minnesota’s Transgender Oral History Project of the Upper Midwest is a three-year venture which aims to collect and archive some 200 interviews with transgender people from around the region. It is part of the University of Minnesota’s Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies. The finished interviews will be stored at the University of Minnesota’s Elmer L. Andersen Library.
NIH grant supports the study of molecular motors at Penn State
A National Institutes of Health grant will support Penn State in the study of intracellular transport and cell division to better understand the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases. The $1.37 million award will support the proposal, “Molecular Mechanism of Kinesin Motility,” which aims to explore the ways kinesin motor proteins move throughout cells to transport biological cargo, and the impact they have on cell division.
