The inauguration ceremony for Harlan H. Hatcher, the University of Michigan’s eighth president, took place back in November 1951. He served as president until Robben W. Fleming assumed the leadership position in 1968. Born in 1898, Hatcher worked at The Ohio State University before becoming U-M’s president. During Hatcher’s tenure, enrollment rose from 17,000 to 37,000, and the budget increased from $44.5 million to more than $186 million. Under his leadership, the university developed North Campus and regional sites in Flint and Dearborn. The Earl V. Moore Building for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, the Institute for Social Research and the Undergraduate Library were built during this time as well. Hatcher died in Ann Arbor in 1998.
