The University of Michigan was ranked the top U.S. public university, based on a new survey announced today by The Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education.
U-M ranked 24th overall among more than 1,000 institutions in the United States.

The new ranking focuses on performance indicators for student success and learning.
According to Times Higher Education, 40 percent of the overall score is based on student outcomes, 30 percent on resources, 20 percent on engagement with students and 10 percent on the learning environment.
The ranking, which has 15 individual performance indicators, also includes data on universities’ revenue per student, student-to-staff ratios, graduation rates, and student diversity and inclusion.
Earlier this month, Times Higher Education released its separate annual world ranking. U-M maintained its No. 21 world ranking, which is based on different outcomes.
That annual list includes more than 900 institutions from 79 countries.
The Times Higher Education ranks world universities on four core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. THE then examines each school’s learning environment, research efforts, citations in literature, number of international community members and industry income.
